Discord Relative Timestamp
The R style is a phrase that keeps updating, such as “in 2 hours” or “a day ago”. Build one from a date, time, and timezone. The highlighted row is the relative tag.

Reading relative time
Discord documents R as relative time. These are illustrative English phrases, not guaranteed cutoffs. Stamp’s preview is approximate; use an absolute tag alongside it for a precise event time.
| Meaning | Illustrative phrase |
|---|---|
| Future instant | in 2 hours |
| Past instant | a day ago |
| Precise event time | Use an absolute style such as F alongside R |
How does a Discord relative timestamp update?
The R tag identifies the same instant as other styles, but displays its distance from the viewing time. The tag itself does not change. Discord’s public documentation does not specify a refresh interval; this page refreshes its own approximation while open.
Are the wording and cutoffs guaranteed?
No. Discord’s public timestamp documentation gives a relative-time example but no exact rounding thresholds. Stamp’s calculations are a local approximation and cannot establish how every Discord client will render a given interval.
